Hardwood Floor Care: What To Do
Small habits can make a meaningful difference in the appearance and service life of a hardwood floor finish. Follow
the instructions provided for your floor and use these general practices to reduce avoidable wear.
Remove Grit Regularly
Vacuum with a hard-floor setting, sweep with a soft-bristle broom or use a microfiber dust mop. Dirt and grit can act
like sandpaper under normal foot traffic.
Clean Spills Promptly
Blot spills with a soft, absorbent cloth. Use a finish-compatible cleaner only as needed and avoid allowing moisture
to remain on or between boards.
Use Mats, Rugs & Floor Protectors
Place breathable mats at entrances and felt protectors beneath furniture. Check protectors periodically and replace
them when dirty or compressed. Use rugs that are approved for finished hardwood floors.
Manage Indoor Conditions
Wood responds to changing moisture conditions. Use heating, cooling, humidification or dehumidification as
appropriate for the home, and follow any humidity range provided by the flooring or finish manufacturer.
Watch for Finish Wear
Contact a hardwood flooring professional when high-traffic areas become dull, scratched or worn. Addressing finish
wear before bare wood is exposed may preserve more options for maintenance.
