Hardwood Floor Care: What Not To Do
Some cleaning methods and household products can damage a hardwood floor finish or make future maintenance more difficult. When in doubt, check the care instructions for the installed finish before trying a new product or tool.
Do Not Allow Grit to Build Up
Sand, dirt and debris can abrade the finish as people and pets move across the floor.
Do Not Wet Mop or Flood the Floor
Standing water and excessive liquid can move between boards and contribute to swelling, cupping, staining or
finish damage. Wipe spills promptly.
Do Not Use Steam Unless Specifically Approved
Heat and moisture may affect wood, finish and seams. Use steam only when the flooring and finish manufacturers
explicitly approve it.
Do Not Use Abrasive or Residue-Producing Products
Avoid abrasive pads, harsh household cleaners, oil soaps, waxes and polishes unless they are specifically
approved for the installed finish. Residue can dull the floor or interfere with future recoating.
Do Not Ignore Point Loads and Scratching
Keep pet nails maintained, move heavy furniture carefully and replace damaged floor protectors. High heels or small furniture feet can concentrate pressure and dent or scratch wood.
Do Not Wait Until Bare Wood Is Exposed
Cleaning cannot replace missing finish. Ask for a professional evaluation when traffic lanes look gray, rough or
visibly worn.
